My approach to physiotherapy combines education and exercise with hands-on techniques. I am committed to continually growing my knowledge and skill set to provide my patients with the most effective treatments. I want my patients to understand their injury so we can work together to find the best solutions. Seeing my patients reach their goals and knowing I have played a part, is what drives me to continue helping people. Having experienced a major injury as a competitive athlete, I understand and have compassion and empathy, with the physical and emotional frustration that comes with an injury. I know the desire to return to your sport and way of life. I am passionate about treating knee injuries, specifically ACL tears and repairs. My interest in knees began from both my own experience of receiving physiotherapy for my knee as a child, and the research I conducted for my Masters’ degrees. I am knowledgeable in all aspects of ACL injuries, from prevention and rehabilitation to return to play. As an avid sports enthusiast growing up in rural Manitoba, I played many sports including baseball, badminton, golf, skiing and curling. Nowadays, my competitive sporting life has taken a backseat to my husband and I introducing our three young boys to many different sports and exploring the outdoors through camping and hiking. I look forward to getting back out onto a sheet of ice soon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acadia University: Bachelor of Kinesiology with Honours, 2007 University of Alberta: Master of Science in Physical Therapy, 2010 12 years of experience treating orthopedics, sports injuries, and acute care in-patients Post graduate courses in manual therapy, acupuncture and dry needling Lover of physical activity completing multiple Gran Fondos and Rideau Lakes cycling tours Since 2010 my approach to physiotherapy has evolved and changed. I primarily focus on education and exercise. I truly believe that education is the key to success with any injury or concern. I strive to educate my clients, so they feel empowered and knowledgeable about their bodies. My greatest goal is to provide clients with the tools to manage and recover from their injury, with my role more like an advisor or coach along the way. As an active kid growing up, I was always interested in the human body – how it worked, how injuries happened and how humans recovered. I grew to love sport and exercise and the benefits that came with them. I understand the passion for movement and want my clients to keep moving in ways that they love. I have worked most of my career in the orthopedic realm of physiotherapy, although I also have extensive experience in acute care medicine. I understand the ramifications of long hospital stays, complicated medical conditions, including stroke, and geriatric medicine. I have a keen interest in encouraging physical activity in the elderly and love providing education around exercise to this population. I have two young boys and have loved showing them the enjoyment of physical activity. We can be found most weekends on a hiking trail, out in a kayak or cycling to parks or coffee shops in our neighborhood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dalhousie University: Bachelor of Science Kinesiology, 2006 University of Alberta: Master of Science in Physical Therapy, 2009 Extensive experience in orthopedics and sports injuries Post-graduate training in dry needling, acupuncture, McKenzie method, and vestibular rehabilitation Passionate about empowering clients to reclaim their independence after injury As I reflect on what drives me to do this job, it simply comes down to helping people. There is something rewarding and special about assisting someone to recover from an injury or to reclaim their independence in the face of disability. During our interactions, I will focus on hearing your needs and empowering you to be an active participant in your recovery by providing a plain language explanation of your condition and the most reasonable and effective treatment options to assist in your recovery process. I draw on my unique background to combine different treatment strategies and strive to create a friendly relaxed treatment environment. My career began in Edmonton at Royal Alexandria Hospital. After two years of acute care rotations, including intensive care, I transitioned to a full-time career at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital to focus on spinal cord injury and general neurology, while also venturing into private practice part-time. Since relocating to Ottawa in 2014, I have been focused on general practice and sports injury treatment and was privileged to broaden my experience by providing embedded support to Canadian Armed Forces personnel. A lifelong student, I continually expand and develop my toolbox of assessment and treatment techniques through post-graduate training opportunities. While growing up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia I participated in hockey and softball and loved to swim. Outside of work I spend my spare time learning to garden, completing projects around my home, and strolling through my community. I dream of traveling the world and seeing all it has to offer.</image:caption>

My athletic career has evolved over the years, from gymnastics and soccer as a child, to runner and triathlete, to powerlifter, to crossfitter and back to runner. My knowledge and understanding of human movement combined with my empathy and compassion towards my clients and their goals is the backbone of my approach to physiotherapy. <image:title>About Us - Matthew Mckinnell</image:title>
<image:caption>McGill University: Bachelor of Science Physical Therapy, 2003 21 years experience treating orthopedic and sports injuries 14 years experience in treating with GunnIMS and dry needling Post Grad training in Manual therapy, Concussion rehab, Acupuncture, FMS and SFMA Passionate about keeping every person enjoying their activities. Young to Old, Recreational to Elite. My physiotherapy story started as a 14 year old who suffered a severe leg injury during my grade 9 hockey season. After three months of hands-on physiotherapy treatment, coupled with a guided progressive exercise program, I was able to return to my team for our final push to the Provincial Championship. Since then, I have been fascinated by orthopedic injuries and their rehabilitation. As a kid, I grew up wanting to play any sport I could find. I had specific loves for hockey, baseball, football and golf. I have continued this love through the years and have enjoyed watching my three kids develop a passion for their own activities. I enjoy my discussions with clients about their hobbies and activities they are passionate about and working together to make a plan to get them back to those activities. If an activity is important to you, it is important to me. Over my 21 years working as a physiotherapist, I have been fortunate enough to work in five different provinces. This gave me the opportunity to learn from local experts from across the country. I have been able to take post grad courses in Gunn IMS, dry needling, acupuncture, manual therapy, concussion rehabilitation and advanced exercise prescriptions. Combining those techniques with a lot of education allows me to fine tune my approach to best suit each individual client. I completed my Gunn IMS (dry needling) training 12 years ago. This has by far been my best treatment technique for breaking the cycle of chronic myofascial and neuropathic pain. Giving my clients small windows of decreased pain to allow them to get back to a small level of exercise is key to their success. I truly believe that every person can improve their quality of life with the right guidance and effort. If a client tells me they can’t participate in their favorite activity anymore, I take it as a personal challenge to help them return to what they love. Regardless of what the injury is, there is always a starting point. It may seem small, but it exists. Together we can find that starting point and build from there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>University of Ottawa: Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honours, 2017 University of Limerick: Master of Science in Physiotherapy, 2022 Experience in orthopaedics, sports injuries and acute care in-patients Passionate about keeping people of all ages as strong and active as possible Post graduate courses in the McKenzie method (back and lower extremity) and dry needling I was first exposed to the world of physiotherapy after suffering a “would have been better if you’d broken it" ankle injury playing volleyball in high school. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing physiotherapist who, through an active and understanding approach, helped get me back on the court and back on the field playing soccer as soon as I safely could. From youth competitive soccer to ballet, then volleyball and touch football in high school, I’ve always been involved in sports from a young age and loved being active. These days, you can mostly find me at the gym strength and circuit training, or on the court or beach playing volleyball. I always knew that I wanted a career in some aspect of healthcare where I could help people through challenging times in their lives. I love that physiotherapy combines this with a healthy and active lifestyle. I had amazing mentors at a sports medicine clinic (including Francine, Brooke and Maria), which is what ultimately led me to pursue this career. I use a combination of exercise, hands-on techniques and education when helping my clients decrease their pain levels and return to the activities they are most passionate about. I’m committed to keeping people of all ages as strong and active as possible and engaged in the activities they love. I believe in working with clients to develop a personalized care plan to help them achieve their goals in a way that works best for them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>University of Ottawa: Bachelor of Science with Honours in Human Kinetics 2011 University of Toronto: Master of Science in Physical Therapy 2014 10 years of experience treating orthopaedics and sports injuries Post graduate courses in manual therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, soft tissue release techniques, TMJ management Avid sports and recreational activity enthusiast, passionate about appreciating nature and the outdoors, ringette, hockey, softball, baseball and golf For over 10 years, I have been passionate about working with clients to help them reclaim their independence and recover from injury in order to participate in the activities they love. I strongly believe that physiotherapy has a place for everyone, whether your goal is returning to high level athletics, or being able to participate in your creative pursuits and hobbies without pain. Education is fundamental to physiotherapy, and I see my role as helping to provide an understanding around the root cause of the client’s injury and working together to help guide the rehabilitation process. My approach will always combine education with manual therapy techniques and exercise prescription to provide the most comprehensive treatment plan. Physiotherapy is an ever-evolving field that allows for continuous growth and development. I am passionate about continually growing my knowledge base and manual skills to be able to provide the most clinically relevant and current treatments. I grew up outside Ottawa, playing sports from a young age, with ringette being my first love. I've laced up skates in many rinks from Kingston to the Ottawa Valley and played softball and hockey, so I’m no stranger to injuries. Over time, my activities have evolved, but my passion for sports and the outdoors has remained. This led me to pursue physiotherapy, where I now help others in my community stay active. Having experienced physiotherapy as both a patient and a practitioner, I strive to create a safe, positive environment in every session, focused on helping clients return to the activities they love.</image:caption>

<image:caption>MANUAL THERAPY: Manual therapy is a form of physical therapy that involves the use of the therapist's hands to mobilize the muscles, joints, and soft tissues of the body. Techniques used in manual therapy include massage, stretching, and joint mobilization and manipulation. ART (ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE ): Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. It helps athletes recover faster after difficult training sessions and can be an effective technique to treat acute and chronic conditions that result in muscle tightness and active trigger points. IASTM (INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATIONS such as cupping and scraping): The instruments are designed to slide over the skin and detect any areas of restriction or tissue damage. Once these areas are identified, the practitioner can use the instruments to apply pressure to the affected tissue in a specific pattern to help break down scar tissue, improve range of motion, and reduce pain and inflammation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Treatment Modalities - Shockwave Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Shockwave Therapy is an extremely high intensity sound wave. You may hear it referred to simply as Shockwave Therapy or you may hear the term Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Radial Shockwave Therapy. The sound waves cause small micro trauma and stimulates cell healing and regenerates new tissues in that area. Calcifications will be broken down and pain relievers are naturally released directly from the cellular level. Anyone with soft tissue injuries can benefit from Shockwave Therapy. We are extremely successful treating Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Compartment Syndrome, IT Band Friction syndrome, Patella Femoral Syndrome, Rotator Cuff Tendonitis and Calcification, Tennis and Golfer’s elbow, Hip Pointers, Deep Muscle Trigger points and even freshly torn muscles…. to name a few.</image:caption>
